Sterling crews battle Iliff structure fire threatening nearby vehicles
Flames from an Iliff outbuilding reached campers and a boat before crews stopped the spread, turning a small-town fire into a wider hazard.

Flames in Iliff came close to turning one structure fire into a much larger loss when an old outbuilding caught fire near West 2nd Avenue and South 3rd Street and the blaze spread to nearby campers and a boat. Sterling Fire Department crews and assisting agencies were dispatched just before 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 27, and found heavy fire throughout the outbuilding with multiple exposures already involved.
The call began as a structure fire, but it quickly became a public-safety problem for the surrounding property. Crews had to keep the fire from moving farther into parked vehicles and other exposed items, a reminder that in a small town like Iliff, tight spacing can let heat and flame jump from one asset to the next before residents have time to react.

Firefighters worked through rain and even some hail while deploying attack lines and knocking down the blaze. No injuries were reported. Peetz Fire, Crook Fire and Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control units joined the response, along with Sterling crews and Logan County agencies, underscoring how quickly a local fire can pull in help from across the county and beyond.
The scene also shows why fast reporting matters in rural Logan County. A fire that starts in an outbuilding can threaten campers, boats, vehicles and nearby homes if it is not spotted early and reported immediately. Keeping fuel sources, trailers, campers and other equipment separated from buildings can help limit the kind of exposure that complicated this incident, especially where access is narrow and emergency crews need room to work.
Logan County Emergency Management uses the Everbridge Community system for geographically targeted alerts, including evacuation notices, and urges residents and businesses to sign up so they can receive timely instructions when emergencies develop. That matters in places like Iliff, a statutory town of just 268 people in the 2024 ACS profile, after the 2020 Census counted 246 residents. Named for cattleman John Wesley Iliff and platted in the late 19th century, the town remains small enough that one fire can ripple far beyond a single property.
