Sterling High School athletes honored for success on and off field
Sterling High School athletes were honored at the Booster Club banquet at the Mitchek Event Center, where the spotlight was as much on character as on competition.
Sterling High School athletes were celebrated Wednesday, May 13, at the Sterling High School Athletic Booster Club’s awards banquet at the Mitchek Event Center, with recognition tied not only to wins and losses but to what players contributed away from the scoreboard. The evening highlighted student success on and off the field or court, signaling that the Booster Club values the habits, leadership and responsibility that shape how Sterling athletes represent their school.
The banquet came during a busy stretch at Sterling High School. The school’s events calendar placed the Senior Awards Ceremony on May 11, graduation on May 17 and finals beginning May 20, making the athletic banquet part of a run of late-year milestones that publicly marked the end of the school year. In that setting, the Booster Club’s recognition gave athletes one more moment in front of families, coaches and classmates before the final weeks of classes and ceremonies closed out the year.
The choice of venue also carried local meaning. Logan County says the Mitchek Event Center, completed in the summer of 2024, was built as a public gathering space for events ranging from wedding receptions and trade shows to class reunions, dances and family reunions. Holding the banquet there placed Sterling athletics inside a newer community venue meant for shared civic occasions, not just school functions, and gave the recognition night a broader hometown feel.
That emphasis matches the tone of Sterling’s other end-of-year honors. A separate Sterling High School awards ceremony recognized effort, growth and dedication in academics, athletics and leadership, reinforcing that the school’s approach to student recognition reaches beyond game results. For athletes honored by the Booster Club, the message was clear: representing Sterling well mattered as much as performing well, and the community was taking note of both.
