Robert Bellows Jr., 36, was arrested on November 13 and is being held in the Whiteside County Jail on an array of weapons related charges, Sterling police announced. Court records and a Sterling Police Department news release list one count of reckless conduct, two counts of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, two counts of unlawful possession of firearm ammunition by a felon, one count of reckless discharge of a firearm, one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm and one count of burglary.

The charges stem from a report of gunshots in the 500 block of East Avenue in Sterling that officers were dispatched to at about 10:22 p.m. on October 30. When officers arrived, they found a resident who was shot and detectives opened an investigation, the release said. The department added, "All evidence shows this to be an isolated incident, and no persons were injured," according to the release.

On Tuesday a search warrant was executed at Bellows’ residence on Second Avenue by Sterling police officers, Illinois State Police Criminal Investigation Division agents, Whiteside County Sheriff’s Office deputies and ISP SWAT Team members. Investigators recovered evidence in the home that the release says supports Bellows’ arrest. Police also indicated additional arrests are planned as the probe continues.

The case is being pursued through the local criminal justice system, and court records show Bellows was scheduled to appear for a detention hearing at 1 p.m. on Friday. Prosecutors and defense counsel will address custody and the next steps as the investigation proceeds.

For residents of Logan County and neighboring communities the arrest underscores the interconnected nature of regional public safety. The visible cooperation between municipal police, county deputies and state investigators reflects the resources often required to resolve serious firearm incidents. While officials describe the incident as isolated, detectives continue working to identify any other persons involved, and investigators encourage residents with information to contact Sterling police. The ongoing investigation will determine whether further charges and prosecutions follow, and local courts will handle legal proceedings in the weeks ahead.
