Sterling Police Drone Helps Capture Wanted Fugitive at Wisdom Park

Sterling Police deployed a drone over Wisdom Park on Tuesday to locate a man wanted on a Colorado Department of Corrections escape warrant, using continuous aerial surveillance to track the subject before Logan County Sheriff's deputies sealed the perimeter and officers completed the arrest.

The subject, whose name had not been released, was wanted on an escape warrant, which the Colorado Department of Corrections issues when an offender has fled from direct custody or from a supervised release program. The warrant classified him as an active corrections fugitive at the time of Tuesday's operation in Sterling.

Sterling Police used the drone to monitor the man's movements across the park in real time. The aerial vantage gave ground units a precise, continuous picture of where the subject was positioned, allowing officers to approach and take him into custody with clear situational awareness rather than searching a public green space blind.

The Logan County Sheriff's Office took responsibility for the perimeter, clearing bystanders from Wisdom Park and sealing the area before the arrest was completed. The park's role as a public gathering space in Sterling made that step essential: an active warrant operation involving a DOC escape subject in an open, unfenced area requires clear separation between law enforcement personnel and civilians who had no reason to expect a fugitive arrest unfolding around them.

Sterling Police credited the joint effort between both agencies as the reason the operation ended without injury or public risk.
