A two-agency response converged on the intersection of U.S. Highway 6 and Colorado Highway 61 in Sterling after a traffic crash on March 23, with both the Sterling Police Department and Sterling Fire Department sending crews to the scene.

Emergency responders were in the process of clearing the scene at the time of initial reports, but officials warned that drivers passing through the area should expect residual traffic disruptions and slow conditions. Motorists in and around that stretch of northeastern Sterling were urged to exercise caution.

The intersection sits at a structurally significant point on the regional road network: it marks the northern terminus of State Highway 61, where the 40-mile corridor that runs south through Logan County meets U.S. 6, one of the principal east-west arteries across the northeastern Colorado plains. The configuration creates a T-intersection where traffic from two state highways merges, a geometry that tends to concentrate conflict points.

CDOT launched a nine-mile resurfacing and widening project on CO 61 in 2024, with work beginning precisely at Mile Point 41, the intersection of SH 6 and SH 61, and extending south to Mile Point 32. That project included shoulder widening with superelevation corrections to six feet at several locations, improved lane markings for better lane recognition, and rumble strips added to the shoulder.

Separately, a broader corridor improvement is still underway on U.S. 6 itself. CDOT and contractor Harper Brothers Construction are executing a resurfacing, bridge replacement, and roadway improvement project on US Highway 6 between Sterling and Atwood, from Mile Point 398 to 405, with an anticipated completion date of December 2026. That project involves removing and replacing the eastbound bridge over Sterling #1 Lateral and includes traffic shifts and crossovers to manage disruption.

Until the scene from March 23 is fully cleared and any residual debris or lane restrictions are addressed, drivers approaching the Hwy 6 and Hwy 61 junction from any direction should account for slowed traffic and potential emergency vehicle activity. No injuries or vehicle details had been released as of initial reports.
