Sterling Traffic Stop Leads to Passenger Arrest on Two Active Warrants
A late-night equipment violation stop in Sterling landed a front-seat passenger in custody on two active warrants, one a felony dating to 2023.

A routine equipment violation became something more for Sterling Police officers working the late shift March 13, when a traffic stop around 10:30 p.m. revealed that the vehicle's front-seat passenger was wanted on two active warrants, including a felony warrant issued in 2023.
Officers took the passenger into custody without incident. Neither the Sterling Police Department's initial report nor its social media post identifying the stop identified the arrested individual by name, and specific charges underlying the warrants were not disclosed in available records. The felony warrant had been outstanding for at least three years before the stop brought it to a close.
The case illustrates how equipment violations, often considered minor infractions, can surface more serious unresolved legal matters. Sterling Police have not released the arrest location by street address, the nature of the 2023 felony charge, or the identity of the second warrant's issuing court.
The arrest is one of several warrant-related contacts Sterling officers and Logan County authorities have logged in recent months. On July 4, Sharday Shinice Washington, 30, of Sterling, was arrested in the 500 block of S. 10th Ave. on Logan County District Court warrants for failure to comply and failure to appear, as well as a Sterling Police Department warrant covering possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a schedule I/II controlled substance, and distributing, manufacturing, or possession with intent to distribute dangerous drugs. Washington was also cited for obstructing and resisting police and possession of drug paraphernalia. Separately, Jeremy Mitchell Kaye, 20, of Sterling, was taken into custody at the Logan County Jail at 2:18 a.m. on Aug. 11 on two Sterling Municipal Court warrants for failure to appear.
Other recent Sterling calls logged by local police include a fraud report June 28 at the 1900 block of S. Sixth Ave., where someone attempted to steal approximately $800, and an Aug. 10 theft at the 1100 block of Platte St. in which a wallet, a Colorado driver's license, a Social Security card, debit and credit cards, a Medicaid card, and $35 cash were taken. That same morning, a steel door at the 800 block of Park St. valued at $648.31 was damaged in a vandalism incident.
The Sterling Police Department had not released additional details about the March 13 arrest as of publication.
