Heavy flames were already tearing through the porch and portions of a single-wide trailer at Applewood Trailer Court on Hays Avenue when Sterling Fire Department crews arrived Tuesday afternoon, March 24.

With fire showing on multiple sides of the structure, crews deployed attack lines on both sides of the trailer simultaneously. A separate crew pushed through the rear of the home to search for a child who had been reported missing. The child was confirmed out of the residence shortly after crews arrived.

One person was treated on scene for injuries and released. No names or ages were provided for either the injured person or the child, and the nature of the injuries was not disclosed.

After knocking down the blaze, crews turned their attention to a missing dog. The search ended with the dog found deceased inside the trailer.

Multiple SFD units responded to the fire, joined by an interagency contingent that included the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control, Merino Volunteer Fire Department, Logan County Sheriff's Office, and Sterling Police Department.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by Sterling Fire Department fire investigators. No preliminary origin or ignition source has been released.
