CHRISTUS Health set to break ground on Los Alamos hospital July 23

CHRISTUS Health will break ground July 23 on its planned Los Alamos community hospital, a 25,000-square-foot, multi-specialty health care facility built on 1.64 acres the system already bought in town. The project is aimed at bringing more care closer to home for Los Alamos County and White Rock residents who still drive to Santa Fe, Española, Albuquerque or farther for routine and urgent visits.

The hospital has become one of the county’s most closely watched business and health stories because it combines construction, hiring and access to care. Los Alamos Medical Center remains the county’s only hospital and a major provider for Northern New Mexico, and one local listing describes it as a 47-bed acute care facility with 70 active or consulting physicians and more than 300 employees. A larger CHRISTUS presence in town could affect where families go for primary care, specialty appointments, imaging and emergency needs, while also bringing contractor work and medical recruitment tied to the buildout.

The timing matters because local maternity care has already shifted. Los Alamos Medical Center announced a regional obstetric-services model with CHRISTUS St. Vincent and Presbyterian Española Hospital on April 24, 2026, and by late June giving birth at Los Alamos Medical Center was no longer an option. That change has left some households weighing longer drives and different delivery plans, which is why the new CHRISTUS facility is being watched as more than a real estate project.
