Traffic control changes added at McDowell County bridge after crash

State transportation officials have added temporary traffic controls at the U.S. Army SP4 Dennis Harvey Roberts Memorial Bridge in McDowell County after a collision damaged the crossing at County Route 5/2 and WV Route 80. The change matters immediately for drivers who use Route 80 as a main corridor, because any restriction there can slow school buses and school traffic, work commutes, emergency vehicles and local freight movement through the county.

An engineering inspection found the bridge remains safe for travel up to the posted 15-ton weight limit, so officials kept the crossing open rather than closing it outright. Temporary traffic controls and the weight limit were put in place after the collision, a response that appears aimed at reducing risk while preserving access for people who rely on the route every day.

The span is better known locally as the Avondale Bridge. A West Virginia Legislature resolution identifies it as bridge number 24-005/02-004.51, or 24A031, carrying County Route 5/2 over Dry Fork in McDowell County. The same resolution says Dennis Harvey Roberts was born April 12, 1949, in McDowell County and lived in Avondale, giving the bridge a local identity that goes beyond the name on the sign.

The new traffic controls also fit a familiar McDowell County pattern, where road washouts, bridge damage and access problems often force officials to balance safety against the need to keep people moving. In 2025, the West Virginia Office of the Governor said state and local agencies completed a new access road after flooding destroyed a private bridge in the county, and earlier West Virginia Division of Highways bid notices included the Superior Bridge replacement. With Route 80 tied to school travel, emergency access and daily hauling, the latest response at the Dennis Harvey Roberts Memorial Bridge looks more like a short-term safeguard than a final fix at a crossing that will need continued attention.
