Fatal I-40 Rollover East of Gallup Kills One, State Police Investigate
A fatal rollover on I-40 westbound near milepost 28 east of Gallup left one person dead after a 2006 Ford van lost control on a snow‑packed, icy stretch of highway, state police say.

New Mexico State Police said their initial investigation found a 2006 Ford van “lost control on a snow‑packed, icy stretch of roadway and rolled” on Interstate 40 westbound near milepost 28 east of Gallup in McKinley County on Feb. 17, 2026, resulting in a fatality. The agency responded to the scene and opened an active investigation into the cause of the rollover.
The preliminary NMSP report did not include the victim’s name, age, or whether the person was a driver or passenger; the New Mexico State Police have not yet released the number of occupants, seatbelt use, or whether toxicology testing has been requested. McKinley County coroner confirmation and a full NMSP crash report remain pending as investigators continue to compile scene evidence and examine vehicle dynamics on the snow‑packed stretch.
The crash underscores hazardous winter driving conditions on I-40 through McKinley County. The milepost location, MP 28 east of Gallup, sits on the corridor travelers commonly use between Gallup and points east, and the State Police description of snow-packed, icy roadway conditions is consistent with NMDOT seasonal advisories for the region, though NMDOT logs for Feb. 17 have not yet been released publicly.
The I-40 rollover joins a string of separate, deadly interstate crashes this season on different stretches of I-40. An Arkansas State Police summary, reposted by the Ludwig Law Firm, says a July 26, 2025 Freightliner crash on I-40 eastbound near mile marker 209 in Monroe County led to one death after the tractor-trailer veered over the fog line, struck a parked 2021 Volvo, “continued about 118 feet, hit the cable barrier, and caught fire.” That summary identified the victim as Rulon Pitcher, 77, of Dublin, a passenger in the Freightliner, and said driver Robert Sohns, 71, of Cleburne was transported to Forrest City Medical Center; the Arkansas summaries are labeled preliminary by state police.
In North Carolina, a Feb. 8, 2026 early-morning collision on I-40 eastbound near the Jones Sausage Road exit between Raleigh and Garner killed a passenger after a Lexus left the roadway and struck a disabled box truck. Troopers indicated that “criminal charges are pending against the Lexus driver. Authorities suspect both high speed and alcohol impairment played a role in the crash. Preliminary findings suggest the vehicle may have been traveling in excess of 100 miles per hour before leaving the roadway,” and investigators closed sections of I-40 for about three hours while processing that scene.
For the McKinley County rollover, New Mexico State Police are the primary investigating agency; the department’s initial statement is the only official account released so far. The investigation is ongoing, and the State Police have signaled they will release a full crash report and any additional findings, including identification of the deceased and whether charges or citations will follow, when those elements are confirmed.
