Gallup and McKinley County Emergency Resources, Contacts, and Support Services
Gallup's Battered Families Services runs a 24-hour crisis line at (505) 722-7483 — one of dozens of local contacts McKinley County residents may urgently need but rarely have on hand.

Knowing who to call before a crisis hits can be the difference between getting help quickly and losing critical hours searching for a number. McKinley County sits at the crossroads of several Native Nations — the Navajo and Zuni reservations both touch this region — and serves a population with complex, layered needs that cut across housing, food security, behavioral health, domestic safety, and basic utility survival. This guide compiles verified local contacts across all of those categories.
Life-Threatening Emergencies
For any immediate threat to life, call 911. The McKinley County Office of Emergency Management oversees a comprehensive plan to prepare for, respond to, and recover from all types of major emergencies. The MCOEM can be reached directly through the McKinley County government website at co.mckinley.nm.us, and its public-facing site at mcoem.com offers disaster preparedness guides specific to the Four Corners area, including guidance on weather emergencies from wildfires to mudslides that are common to this region.
Behavioral Health and Mental Health Crises
New Mexico's 988 is the 24/7 free and confidential lifeline for emotional, mental, or alcohol and substance use support, made available to all New Mexicans through the Behavioral Health Services Division of the New Mexico Health Care Authority. Call or text 988 from any phone, any time.
For a broader set of crisis and access services, if you or a loved one is experiencing any kind of emotional crisis, mental health, or substance use concern, you can find help 24 hours a day, seven days a week, by calling the New Mexico Crisis and Access Line at 1-855-NMCRISIS (662-7474). The line is staffed by professional counselors. Counselors have access to emergency workers if needed, are trained in assessing a crisis, and do not stop at the end of the call — clinicians refer callers to local resources or conduct a follow-up call by the next business day.
You can also reach a crisis counselor by text: text "NAMI" to 741741 for 24/7, confidential, free crisis counseling.
For outpatient behavioral health services in Gallup, Synergy Behavioral Health Center operates at 211 W. Mesa, Suite 4, Gallup, NM 87305, with appointments available Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. The center can be reached at (505) 862-9992 and serves McKinley County with outpatient behavioral health assessment, substance abuse services, and employee assistance programs.
Western NM Counseling Services maintains two McKinley County locations: 15 Navarre Blvd, Thoreau, NM 87323, reachable at (505) 862-7417; and 2025 East Aztec in Grants, reachable at (505) 863-3828.
The scale of need in McKinley County is significant. To manage the roughly 20,000 people in McKinley County who may need behavioral health care each year, the area would require more than 250 clinicians each carrying a caseload of 75 clients — right now there are around 40 clinicians. A new Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic operated by Santa Fe Recovery Center is working to close that gap in Gallup, though it is still building out staffing and services.

For Native American households, SWIF assistance at (505) 863-9568 is strictly limited to Native Americans, with priority given to the elderly, handicapped, and families with dependent children. Along with the Navajo, they also serve the Zuni, Hopi, and other pueblo tribes of the area.
