Navajo Nation Council recognizes BYU guard Sydney Benally for achievements

The 25th Navajo Nation Council recognized BYU guard Sydney Benally in Window Rock on the opening day of its 2026 Summer Council Session, with Speaker Crystalyne Curley presenting the honor. The council cited Benally for her contributions to the Navajo Nation and for achievements on and off the basketball court.

The recognition landed inside the council’s formal summer business after lawmakers accepted the 2026 Summer Session Speaker’s Report on July 20. That placed Benally’s honor in the official legislative record at a session where the Navajo Nation’s elected body was also documenting its priorities and public business.

Benally’s basketball profile was already well established before the council took up the recognition. BYU signed her to the 2025-26 squad on April 21, 2025, describing her as a two-time New Mexico Gatorade Player of the Year and the 88th-ranked player in the class of 2025. BYU later named her Big 12 Freshman of the Week on Dec. 1, 2025, and on March 20, 2026, she set a freshman assist record in BYU’s 72-47 win over Alabama A&M in the WBIT first round.

The Navajo Nation President’s Office had already put Benally in the public spotlight earlier in the year, with posts showing President Buu Van Nygren supporting her during BYU games, including the team’s victory over ASU on Jan. 6 and a Feb. 26 matchup that drew tribal nations out in record numbers. That visible backing from Navajo leadership helped frame Benally as more than a college athlete; she became a player whose games were watched closely across the Nation.

For readers in McKinley County, the recognition matters because it shows a Navajo athlete from the region moving from local promise to institutional recognition at the tribal level. In places like Gallup and Zuni Pueblo, where young players often look for a path from school gyms to higher competition, Benally’s résumé now includes a formal honor from the Navajo Nation Council itself.
