IRS sets up temporary tax help center at Marathon library

Monroe County residents who need face-to-face federal tax help will have a temporary option in Marathon, where the IRS will set up a special Community Assistance Visit at the Monroe Public Library, Marathon Branch.

The four-day site will run Monday through Thursday, June 1 through 4, 2026, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. each day at 3490 Overseas Highway, Marathon, FL 33050. U.S. Rep. Carlos Gimenez announced the visit, which is designed for taxpayers who cannot resolve issues online or by phone and need in-person help close to home.

Taxpayers can walk in or make an appointment by calling 615-250-5328. The IRS says the temporary center can help with account inquiries, adjustments, basic tax law questions, payment arrangements, identity authentication under the Taxpayer Protection Program, transcripts, tax forms and guidance on IRS.gov tools. Because the site is temporary, IRS employees will not accept payments in person, and taxpayers are being urged to pay online.

Visitors should bring current state or government-issued photo identification and any relevant IRS letters, notices or requested documents. The IRS also said professional foreign-language interpretation will be available by phone, while sign-language interpreter services will be scheduled for a later date if needed.

The Marathon stop matters in a county where residents often face long drives and limited scheduling options for federal services. The Monroe Public Library branch at 3490 Overseas Hwy. is a familiar local access point, with Monroe County’s facility listing naming Rob Rinaldi as the contact and listing the branch phone number as 305-743-5156. The City of Marathon also posted notice of the free tax assistance, underscoring the local need for the service.

The temporary IRS help center arrives alongside an existing tax-prep network already serving the Keys. United Way of Collier and the Keys’ VITA program provides free tax preparation for eligible low- to moderate-income residents in Monroe County, using IRS-certified volunteers. Its most recent tax season helped 682 taxpayers and returned $384,624 in refunds to the community.

For Marathon residents, the distinction is important. VITA offers free return preparation during scheduled library sessions, while the IRS pop-up is aimed at clearing up account problems, notices and other federal tax issues that can stall refunds or trigger collection problems. The Monroe County Tax Collector’s Office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., but the IRS visit will give Keys taxpayers a separate, specialized federal option during normal weekday hours.
