Marathon's Downtown Splash Pad Fully Funded With $600K Commitment, On Schedule
Marathon announced the downtown splash pad is fully funded with $600,000 committed, securing a major family amenity and reducing immediate city capital strain.

The City of Marathon said in Public Release #02-26 that "The downtown splash pad project remains fully funded and on schedule." City officials reported a combined $600,000 in committed funding for the project, including $500,000 from United Way, a level of support that clears a principal hurdle for construction financing.
City planning documents identify the project as the "Community Park Splash Pad" and link it to a broader slate of park investments that include a new restroom and a concession window. City staff wrote, "We are working with Aquatix, as they have successfully performed similar work for the City of Key West." Staff also noted they were "looking at our options, including additional other funding to minimize the direct expense to the City" as they adjust plans and budgets.
Permitting and infrastructure coordination are already underway. City records show the skate park demolition is complete and permits for skate park components and related infrastructure are under review. The city is preparing an access permit to the Florida Department of Transportation to relocate park access in line with a new parking configuration and has solicited traffic analysis proposals tied to that submission. Staff said they are modifying the infrastructure plan "to accommodate the Spash Pad and future restroom in the area to minimize the cost and disruption as we accommodate those projects."
The splash pad announcement arrives amid a busy capital program. City budget materials and project lists show concurrent work on a Sombrero Beach Road bike path design, a new Parks & Rec maintenance building (with a purchase order in production and an estimated 40% savings on the building process), replacement of dinghy docks, pickleball courts, and bridge replacements in Little Venice. The 2025-26 budget was finalized with no tax increase and a property tax rollback; the budget also funds a fire rescue staffing level of 48 employees that meets NFPA 1500 standards and includes new apparatus purchases of $1,072,909 for an engine truck arriving November 2026 and $320,000 for a fire/rescue transport vehicle arriving May 2026.
Key questions remain for residents and oversight bodies. City statements do not reconcile whether the $600,000 commitment fully covers the preliminary cost estimate that city documents say "exceeded our budget and donation for the work." The municipal release affirms committed funding and schedule status, but does not provide a final line-item project budget, a construction start or completion date, or permit clearances tied to grant releases. The city also has not confirmed which United Way chapter provided the $500,000 or whether Aquatix will serve as prime contractor under a formal contract or memorandum of understanding.
For context on fundraising thresholds and operational choices, neighboring municipalities have set minimums and system preferences: a Hanover town plan tied construction commencement to a minimum $300,000 raised and the advisory committee there recommended a flow-through water system. State grant processes can also shape timing; applications typically close April 1 and can take 18 to 24 months for appropriations, with construction funds released only after permits are secured.
What this means for Marathon residents is practical: a major family amenity appears funded and poised to move forward, but exact timing, contractor arrangements, and whether project costs require additional city dollars remain to be confirmed. City officials have committed that the project is on schedule; the next municipal updates should spell out the construction timeline, permit milestones, and the full budget breakdown so voters and park users can track costs, potential disruptions, and the new facility’s opening.
