Seasonal Reef Fish Closures Begin in Monroe County, Affecting Anglers

Beginning Jan 1, 2026 seasonal closures will restrict recreational harvest of several reef fish species in Florida waters, with Monroe County subject to the Atlantic shallow water grouper closure. The measures aim to protect spawning fish, and local anglers and businesses must adjust practices while contributing data to state management efforts.

State conservation action will reshape recreational fishing patterns in Monroe County this winter and spring. Beginning Jan 1, 2026 the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will close recreational harvest of a set of popular reef fish to protect populations during critical spawning periods. The most directly consequential measure for Monroe County is the Atlantic state waters closure on shallow water grouper, which will last through April 30, 2026.

The shallow water grouper group covered by the closure includes black, gag, red, yellowfin, yellowmouth and scamp grouper, as well as rock hind, red hind, coney and graysby. Recreational anglers in Atlantic state waters, including those who fish from private vessels in Monroe County, will be prohibited from harvesting these species for the four month period intended to reduce fishing mortality during heightened reproductive activity.

A separate closure will affect gray triggerfish in Gulf state waters. That closure will remain in place through the end of February and is scheduled to reopen March 1, 2026. The gray triggerfish restriction applies to recreational harvest from private vessels in Gulf state waters, which extend up to nine nautical miles from shore.

These seasonal closures are part of recurring management actions used by the commission to align fishing opportunity with biological cycles. For Monroe County the immediate impact will be practical and economic. Anglers who target grouper will need to alter trip plans, and businesses that support recreational fishing vessel operations may see reduced demand for certain trips and services during the closure period. At the same time the restrictions are designed to sustain fish stocks that underpin long term recreational opportunity and local revenue.

Anglers fishing from private vessels are reminded to enroll in the State Reef Fish Survey, a program that provides data the commission uses to monitor reef fish populations and inform future management decisions. Verify current rules and closure boundaries on MyFWC.com or through the Fish Rules App before heading out. Participation in the survey and attention to commission regulations shape how well seasonal protections achieve conservation goals and preserve future fishing access for the Monroe County community.
