66-Year-Old Man Found Dead in Jacksonville House Fire on West Walnut Street
A 66-year-old man was found dead inside a house fire on West Walnut Street; the Illinois State Fire Marshal has taken over the investigation.

A 66-year-old man was found dead inside a house fire in the 800 block of West Walnut Street in Jacksonville, prompting a State Fire Marshal investigation and a coroner’s on-scene pronouncement. The incident raises local safety and investigative concerns for neighbors and officials as they seek to determine cause and extent of damage.
Jacksonville Fire Department dispatch records show units were sent to the 800 block of West Walnut at approximately 6:11 p.m., with crews arriving about 6:14 p.m. An off-duty Jacksonville firefighter located the victim inside the home and met on-duty crews, who when making entry determined the man was "nonviable." Morgan County Coroner’s Office identified the decedent as Roger B. Rueter; Morgan County Coroner Marcy Patterson pronounced the man dead at the residence. An extended search confirmed Rueter was the only person inside the house.

Firefighters reported smoke coming from an open front door on arrival and later found smoldering in a "couple" of locations inside the home. Crews pulled a handline to extinguish hotspots, used positive pressure ventilation to clear smoke, and pulled ceiling material to check the attic for extension of fire. Fire crews remained on scene until about 8:00 p.m., when the Coroner’s Office and the Illinois State Fire Marshal arrived to assume the investigation.
On-scene fire operations and early assessments indicate the fire did not rapidly spread through the structure. Firefighters noted, "It appears the fire started in the living room area." They also said, "Fire damage was limited because of a lack of oxygen to drive the fire, but there was smoke damage throughout the home." Jacksonville Police Department officers were present to block traffic and secure the scene; police said they are "not investigating this incident as being suspicious in any way."
The Illinois State Fire Marshal has taken over investigative responsibility and will determine origin and cause. Officials have not released a final cause or damage estimate; investigators have yet to provide public findings on whether the residence is structurally salvageable or a total loss.
For neighbors on West Walnut and across Jacksonville, the immediate impacts include the loss suffered by the decedent’s family and the reminder of fire risks in older homes. Residents should expect follow-up from investigators and possible temporary street closures while officials complete on-site work. The State Fire Marshal and Morgan County Coroner’s Office are the primary contacts for further details; additional information on cause and damage will be released when their inquiries conclude.
