Crimestoppers Seeks Tips After AC Units Stripped at Jacksonville Business
Three York brand AC units were stripped of compressors at a business on Old State Road east of Jacksonville; Crimestoppers is offering cash rewards for tips.

Someone stripped compressors and key components from three York brand commercial air-conditioning units at a business in the 2100 block of Old State Road east of Jacksonville sometime between Monday, March 30 and Wednesday, April 1, leaving the equipment damaged and the building's cooling system in pieces.
The Morgan County Sheriff's Office is investigating, and Crimestoppers of Morgan-Cass-Scott Counties went public with a tip request on April 10 after no suspects had been identified. The business has not been named in connection with the investigation.
HVAC compressors are among the most expensive single components in a commercial cooling system, and their removal typically requires tools, a vehicle capable of hauling heavy equipment, and at least some mechanical knowledge. Theft rings targeting commercial condensers and compressors are documented across rural Illinois because scrapyards and secondary parts markets pay for copper coils, refrigerant-handling components, and steel housings. That organized pattern is exactly what makes this type of crime hard to solve without community tips.
For a small business, the fallout extends well beyond the repair bill. A damaged commercial HVAC system can force partial or full closure during hot stretches, putting employees and customers at risk while cutting revenue at the same time. Repair or replacement costs for commercial compressors can run into the thousands of dollars, and in some cases insurance claims trigger premium increases that linger long after the hardware is fixed. With summer approaching, that is not an abstract risk.

Nearby business owners on and around Old State Road can take concrete steps this week. Locking security cages bolted around outdoor condenser units cost a few hundred dollars and are available through HVAC suppliers and farm supply stores. Visible surveillance cameras pointed at rooftop or ground-mounted units deter thieves and, if a theft occurs, produce footage investigators can actually use. Requesting increased after-hours patrol passes from the Morgan County Sheriff's Office costs nothing and can be arranged with a single phone call to the department.
