Illinois College names alum Dylan Dudley as Blueboys basketball coach

Illinois College has turned to one of its own to lead a Blueboys program that sits near the center of Jacksonville sports. The college named Class of 2005 graduate Dylan Dudley as its new men’s basketball coach on July 9, giving a familiar face the job of protecting the momentum built by a 25-3 season, the program’s first Midwest Conference regular-season title and its first NCAA Tournament victory.

Dudley arrives with a built-in link to alumni and fans. He played for Illinois College from 2001 to 2005, scored 1,026 career points and is one of only 24 players in program history to top the 1,000-point mark. Illinois College said he was part of a Blueboy Hall of Fame team, and the 2002-03 squad he played on became the first in program history to qualify for the NCAA Division III Tournament before the college inducted that team into its Sports Hall of Fame in 2009.

The hire also gives the Blueboys a coach with a broad résumé. Illinois College said Dudley brings more than two decades of coaching experience across NCAA Division I, II and III. His most recent stop was Alton High School, where he went 72-59 in four seasons, won back-to-back regional championships and was named Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Coach of the Year. The Midwest Conference also noted that his Alton teams posted a cumulative 3.61 GPA, a detail that fits a program trying to balance wins with classroom results.

Before returning to Illinois, Dudley was head boys’ basketball coach and assistant athletic director at Nolan Catholic High School in Fort Worth, Texas. There he guided the program to the 2022 TAPPS Area Championship while also handling camps, fundraising, alumni engagement and community outreach. Illinois College said Dudley’s coaching background also includes stops at Midwestern State, Henderson State, Central Missouri, Tennessee-Martin, Drury and Westminster.

For Jacksonville, the move carries more than roster implications. Illinois College is one of the city’s most visible institutions, and a former player returning as head coach is likely to strengthen alumni buy-in while keeping the Blueboys tied to the school’s long basketball history. Dudley, a guard from Sullivan, Illinois, also gives the college another central Illinois connection at a time when regional recruiting remains critical.

He replaces Stephen Schweer, who stepped down to take a job at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh earlier this spring. The first-year standard for Dudley is clear: keep the Blueboys in the Midwest Conference title picture, sustain recruiting momentum and show that Jacksonville’s recent postseason run was not a one-off but the start of a longer stretch of relevance.
