Downtown Jacksonville got its unofficial summer kickoff Saturday as Blues & Brews filled Central Park Plaza on the Square with free live music, food trucks and a beer wagon from noon to 4 p.m. The afternoon was built for lingering: lawn chairs, a steady run of blues sets, and enough downtown energy to keep families, visitors and nearby businesses in the middle of the same crowd.

Jacksonville Main Street scheduled John G Drake for noon, followed by David Berchtold at 1 p.m., Reverend Robert at 2 p.m. and Devin Williams at 3 p.m. That lineup gave the event a full-afternoon rhythm instead of a single short performance, which fit the organization’s goal of turning Blues & Brews into a relaxed downtown gathering rather than a quick stop-and-go concert. Organizer Judy Tighe described it as a good chance for people to sit and relax while enjoying the day, and Main Street has framed the festival as a way to kick off the outdoor event season.

The event was free to attend, and the city’s listing told guests to bring lawn chairs. Food and beverages were sold on site, with several food trucks and a beer wagon adding to the draw. Tighe also said the festivities included a giant beer pong game, a nod to the festival’s more playful side without turning the afternoon into a one-note party. Alcohol purchasers had to be 21 or older, show ID and receive an armband and drink tickets.

Blues & Brews also set the stage for a longer downtown stretch that starts later in the month. Jacksonville Main Street’s 2026 Downtown Concert Series runs from May 29 through July 31, a free eight-week lineup that is family-friendly and pet-friendly, with an after-concert party at a different downtown establishment each week. For Morgan County, that calendar matters because it gives downtown Jacksonville a clear season of repeat traffic, not just one Saturday surge.
