Jacksonville survivor launches weekly support group for women

A new weekly support group for women affected by domestic violence and sexual assault will begin meeting in Jacksonville on Monday, July 13, giving Morgan County survivors a free in-person option at Go Church. Voices of Strength was founded by Jacksonville native Alexa Brickey, now an on-air personality at Springfield station WQLZ, in partnership with the church at 767 South West Street.

The group will meet from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. every week and is open to women affected by domestic violence or sexual assault. Children are welcome, and a playroom will be available during meetings.

Brickey founded the project out of her own experiences as a survivor of domestic violence, sexual assault and aggravated battery. The goal is to create a safe place where survivors can connect with others who understand what they have been through. The sessions will include group discussion, literature written by survivors, guest speakers and information about community resources such as counseling, recovery support and mental health services.

Illinois domestic violence programs are free and private, with services that include 24-hour crisis hotlines, counseling, legal advocacy, temporary food and housing and referrals. The Illinois Coalition Against Domestic Violence's network includes more than 60 member organizations in local communities across Illinois, including providers that offer confidential phone lines, safety planning, child custody information and help with orders of protection.

Survivors do not need to leave an abusive home to get help. For anyone in crisis, the Illinois Domestic Violence hotline at 1-877-863-6338 can provide support, information and referrals to nearby services.
