Close to 4,600 people turned out for the 77th annual Kiwanis Pancake and Sausage Day at the Morgan County Fairgrounds on March 16, defying what co-chair Pam Martin called one of the coldest editions of the event in recent history.

Bitter wind chills shaped how the crowd moved through the day. The drive-through lane at the fairgrounds' southern Westgate entrance stayed busy from the start, while in-house dining in the 4-H Building slowed considerably during the coldest stretches. A late rush ultimately filled the hall, pushing the final count to nearly 4,600, a figure Martin described as extraordinary given the conditions.

Martin, one of two co-chairs for the event, said diners were complimentary about the effort volunteers put in. She noted that attendance typically runs a bit higher in a normal year, but the turnout was nonetheless remarkable. All proceeds will be reinvested locally, with Martin saying the money will be pumped right back into the community to serve children in the area.

The $10 ticket covered an all-you-can-eat dine-in meal, with children five and under admitted free when accompanied by a paying adult. Dine-in service ran from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., while the express drive-through and carry-out option was available from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tickets were sold through Kiwanis members as well as at Heartland Bank and Trust, The Source, CNB Bank and Trust Co., The Farmers State Bank and Trust Co., and Petefish and Skiles Bank, in addition to at the door.

The Morgan County Fairgrounds hosted the event for the second consecutive year in 2026, having also served as the venue in 2025. The event's 77-year run makes it one of the longer-standing community fundraising traditions in Jacksonville, and this year's crowd, wind chills and all, did little to suggest that streak is in any danger of cooling off.
