Large Fire Erupts at ILMO Products Plant in Mattoon

Firefighters spent hours Tuesday battling a large fire at the Mattoon branch of Jacksonville headquartered ILMO Products Co., drawing mutual aid from six neighboring departments and temporarily shutting major routes. Mattoon Fire Department crews responded around 6:15 p.m. and found a 100 foot by 50 foot pole style building fully involved, with an early glow visible more than a mile away. Mutual aid arrived from Charleston, Lincoln, Wabash, Humboldt, Cooks Mills and Neoga, and crews used thousands of gallons of water to suppress the flames.

Public safety measures included closing Illinois Route 41 and County Highway 13 while teams prepared evacuation plans in case hazardous smoke threatened populated areas. Wind pushed smoke into a nearby farm field, and crews focused on protecting on site anhydrous ammonia tanks successfully. No injuries were reported. The fire was reported under control by 8:53 p.m., mutual aid units were released shortly after, and the scene was cleared by 11:38 p.m. The Illinois State Fire Marshal was requested to investigate the cause.

For Mattoon residents the immediate impacts were traffic congestion, temporary interruption of local operations and heightened concern about air quality and agricultural exposure. The presence of anhydrous ammonia on site made the response more complex, prompting precautionary measures even though officials did not order evacuations. Farmers and residents downwind will want to be alert to any testing or advisories from local authorities in the coming days.

Economically, the facility is part of a Jacksonville headquartered company that said services will continue at other locations, limiting broader supply disruptions. Locally, however, any temporary shutdown can affect employment and contracting work tied to the site, and the fire marshal investigation will be important for insurers and regulators assessing liability and future safety obligations.
