Theater Manager Sam Hampton Takes Operational Ownership of Illinois Theater

Sam Hampton stepped in to keep the lights on at 204 N. Mauvaisterre St. this week, assuming operational ownership of the Illinois Theater on Friday from Eisentraut Theatres after a potential sale to the Jacksonville Center for the Arts fell through and the current owner had planned to shutter the downtown Jacksonville venue entirely.

Hampton has managed the historic Illinois Theater since July 2022, spending those nearly four years working to clean up the building and improve its condition. The transition to operational owner represents a significant escalation of his role, one he pursued independently after the Jacksonville Center for the Arts retracted its bid to purchase the property. That group had been considering converting the theater into an arts center rather than continuing movie operations, and Eisentraut Theatres had made clear it would close the venue if that sale did not go through.

With no buyer in place, Hampton moved to take over the theater's operations himself. The Illinois Theater has served downtown Jacksonville moviegoers for decades and, had Hampton not intervened, its closure would have removed one of the city's few remaining single-location cinemas.

The nature of the arrangement between Hampton and Eisentraut Theatres, specifically whether it constitutes a purchase of assets, a lease, or another form of agreement, has not been publicly detailed in reporting to date. Sources consistently describe the transfer as "operational ownership" or "operational control" rather than a sale of the property itself.

Hampton's stated focus going forward includes expanding the theater's programming in addition to the facility improvements he has already pursued since taking the manager role in 2022.
