Window Shatters at Leo's Pizza, Police Probe Possible Projectile
A restaurant window at Leo's Pizza on South Main Street shattered while customers were dining on Tuesday evening, sending glass into a pizza but causing no injuries. Jacksonville police are investigating the cause, and the incident raises local concerns about downtown safety and potential costs for small businesses.

On the evening of December 10, customers eating in a booth at Leo's Pizza, 230 S. Main St., heard a cracking sound about 7 p.m. and discovered that the window beside their table had shattered, sending shards of glass into their pizza. Jacksonville police were called to the scene and began an investigation into the source of the break.
Police said the cracking noise was not as loud as a gunshot, and the diners believed the sound might have been caused by a BB gun. Investigators were unable to verify that theory, according to Jacksonville police Lieutenant Mark Lonergan. "It could have been a rock," he said. "They assumed it was perhaps a BB gun, but that was not verified." Lonergan added that no one was hit by a BB pellet or the shattered glass and no one was hurt.
The immediate consequence for patrons was alarm and a mess to clean up. For the business the incident creates potential financial and reputational effects. Small restaurants often absorb costs for emergency repairs and may see short term declines in customer traffic after an event that raises safety concerns. The breaking of a commercial storefront window can also trigger insurance claims, deductibles, and possible repairs to glass and framing, all of which affect operating margins for locally owned establishments.
Beyond the individual restaurant, the episode highlights broader community issues. Incidents involving projectiles or vandalism in commercial corridors can prompt calls for increased patrols, better street lighting, and more frequent checks by business owners. Local officials and business associations often weigh such measures against budget trade offs and the long term goal of preserving downtown commerce. For residents, the episode underscores how even isolated events can ripple into local economic stress and perceptions of safety.
Jacksonville police continue to investigate and ask anyone with information about the incident to contact their department. The event is a reminder for patrons and proprietors alike to remain alert, document damage when it occurs, and report suspicious activity that could help prevent similar episodes.
