Kersten Moses Francilus was already on neighbors' radar before the attack began. Residents in the Southwood community near Stuart started calling 911 shortly before 4 p.m. Thursday to report a stranger going door to door, acting erratically and asking people where to find a bank. The 25-year-old did not live in the neighborhood and had no connection to anyone there. Within minutes, he approached a woman in her mid-70s walking her dog on the 6000 block of SE Black Oak Lane and stabbed her more than 16 times with a steak knife.

A civilian bystander tried to pull Francilus off the woman but could not. Deputies arrived to find him still actively stabbing the victim. She did not survive.

Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek described the assault as a "random act of violence" that was "extremely violent," noting it occurred in what he called a "quiet" community. There is no known prior relationship between Francilus and the victim.

Prosecutors initially charged Francilus with second-degree murder, then upgraded it to first-degree premeditated murder. At his first court appearance Friday morning, a troubling detail emerged: Francilus had referred to the victim as "Jewish" during the attack, and investigators are now examining whether the assault carries a hate-crime dimension.

Neighbors remembered the woman as "adorable," "sweet," and a "delightful woman." The combination of an unprovoked stranger, 16 stab wounds, a bystander unable to stop it, and a possible hate-crime motive has left Southwood shaken in ways that a murder charge alone cannot fully address. The investigation remains ongoing.
