Matt Mitchell turned a four-shot deficit into a two-stroke victory at Mountain Falls Golf Club, closing with a four-under-par 32 over his final nine holes to win the Championship Division at the 2026 Nye County Amateur in Pahrump. Mitchell finished at 68-67-135, edging Garret Kieffer, who posted 64-73-137, with Grant McKay third at 66-73-139.

The result gave Nye County’s annual amateur a clear local storyline: a Southern Nevada player who had recently earned medalist honors in U.S. Open qualifying added another title in Pahrump, on a course that continues to serve as a regional stage for serious amateur golf. Mitchell, who played four years of baseball for UNLV and works in the Las Vegas gaming industry, said the wind picked up around No. 10 and that patience and putting helped him finish strong.

The championship was only one piece of a weekend that spread titles across several divisions. John Bobroski won the Senior gross title at 70-73-143, finishing six strokes ahead in that flight. Steve McPherson captured the Silver gross title, while Trevor Coss won the Net title, Hendra Wijaya took the Senior net title and Dave Golder claimed the Silver net title. The spread of winners across gross and net categories gave the event the feel of a full county championship rather than a single-division tournament.

That structure matters in Nye County, where an event like this is more than a scorecard. By bringing in players from across the Southern Region and giving golfers of different ages and handicap levels a place in the same competition, the amateur keeps Pahrump on the golf map and gives Mountain Falls a recurring role as a tournament host. For local players, it also offers a weekend of competition that can spill into meals, course traffic and other spending around town.

Mountain Falls itself is built for that role. The 18-hole championship layout opened in 2002, plays to a par 72 and stretches 7,186 yards from the longest tees, with a 70.0 course rating and a 116 slope. About an hour west of the Las Vegas Strip, the course has become a familiar stop for county-level golf, and the Nye County Amateur has returned there in consecutive years. In 2025, held May 17-18, the same event produced champions Ralph “RJ” Arone, Todd Roberts and John Steele, with Joe Alvarez, Joel Panning and George Yocum winning the net titles.
