Nye County seeks contractor for Homestead and SR-160 road improvements

Nye County is seeking a contractor for Bid Number 2026-04, Homestead and SR-160 Roadway Improvements, a construction services package that puts one of Pahrump’s busiest growth corridors back in the public works queue. The bid covers traffic control, median removal and patching, fog seal, new pavement markings and median construction along Homestead Road and State Route 160.

The scope is narrow enough to show the county is targeting problem spots rather than rebuilding the whole corridor. A BidNet Direct abstract lists 690 square feet of median removal, 1,928 square feet of 1-inch PG 76-22NV mill and overlay, and 1,381 square feet to construct a tack-on median. It also calls for removing 15 flexible delineators and installing four median nose marking elements per NDOT Standard Detail ST-9. Starbridge’s summary likewise lists 690 square feet of median removal.

That mix of work matters in a corridor where traffic, access and development pressure all meet. SR-160 is one of the main north-south routes through Pahrump, and Homestead Road cuts through an area that has been filling in with homes, commercial pads and other new uses. Even a limited roadway project can affect turn movements, lane availability and access to nearby parcels while crews are working.

The current bid also sits on top of a longer county pattern on Homestead. Nye County previously posted a Homestead Road Re-Build under Bid Number 2017-11, and a Nye County CivicAlerts notice dated Sept. 5, 2018 said Public Works was waiting for final approval of a $133,000 change order before resuming resurfacing work on Homestead Road. That history shows the corridor has needed repeated attention, not a one-off fix.

Public safety and weather have added to the pressure on SR-160. Heavy flooding in Pahrump once forced public offices and SR 160 to close, and flash flooding left road hazards and triggered county office closures in another event. Separate reporting also noted soils testing at Nevada Highway 160 and Homestead, a sign that the intersection has already been under study as part of larger road planning.

The broader challenge for Nye County is whether roadway capacity can keep pace with Pahrump’s expansion. A Pahrump Valley Times report said the county was preparing for a future Homestead and 160 rebuild, with the Kingdom Corner developer expected to bear 21 percent of the improvement costs. Another report said $12.5 million in improvements to Highway 160 north of Basin Avenue would rehabilitate a 13.5-mile stretch. The new bid suggests the county is still working section by section to keep one of its most visible corridors functional as growth pushes outward.
