Manlius fire leaves resident burned, firefighter treated for heat exhaustion

A fire at Erie Village burned one resident and sent a Minoa firefighter to the hospital for heat exhaustion as crews battled flames in oppressive summer heat in Manlius.

Firefighters were called to the townhouse community on Parkington Circle in the Town of Manlius at about 5:23 p.m. on July 1. The CNY911 incident log listed the residential fire at 5:22 p.m. Trevor Van Auken, deputy chief with the Minoa Fire Department, said crews arrived to a two-story wood-frame structure and searched both the residence and a conjoining unit to make sure everyone inside was accounted for.

One occupant was treated for burns at the scene. A Minoa firefighter was transported to a hospital for heat exhaustion and later released in good condition.

The blaze was largely confined to the exterior of the residence, but it still badly damaged the home and displaced a family.

Crews extinguished the fire in about 30 minutes. The response brought together the Minoa Fire Department, Manlius Fire Department, Manlius Police Department, Minoa Ambulance, National Grid and Onondaga County fire investigators, and investigators continued to examine the cause.

The National Weather Service had upgraded the region to an extreme heat warning, with heat index values forecast to reach 105 to 110 degrees in parts of the area and little overnight relief expected. Onondaga County Health Department urged residents on July 2 to take measures against the heat over the holiday weekend.
