Syracuse police shut down a viral “bird thaw” gathering at Megaton Games in Eastwood after hundreds of people packed the parking lot at 2533 James Street and watched a block of ice slowly melt to reveal a trapped bird. The store owner was issued an appearance ticket after officers determined the event was unauthorized and lacked a permit.

The scene drew a crowd to the game store on Friday, where Megaton Games had promoted the event online for 4 p.m. under the phrase “Free as a bird: Syracuse bird thawing event.” By the time police intervened, the novelty stunt had become a large and unsanctioned public gathering on a busy James Street corridor.

The event was also billed as a fundraiser for Humane CNY, adding a charitable angle to what quickly turned into a crowd-control issue for Syracuse police. The gathering unfolded in a parking lot in the Eastwood neighborhood, where onlookers stood around as the ice block thawed and the bird inside was revealed.

The shutdown highlights how quickly a social-media-driven promotion can draw a crowd to a small neighborhood business before city officials have a chance to respond.
