Kentucky State Police investigate deadly Owsley County house fire
Vernon Herald, 60, died in a fire on Amburgey Road in Booneville as Kentucky State Police and the fire marshal investigated its cause.

Kentucky State Police were investigating a deadly house fire on Amburgey Road in Booneville after Vernon Herald, 60, was found dead at the scene Tuesday morning.
Troopers and detectives from KSP Post 7 responded just before 10 a.m. on Feb. 24, 2026, after the Owsley County Sheriff’s Department requested investigative assistance. The Owsley County Coroner’s Office later identified the victim as Herald, of Booneville, and pronounced him dead at the scene.
The Kentucky State Fire Marshal’s Office was assisting in determining how the fire started and where it began. KSP said Detective Casey Caudill was leading the investigation, which remained active as officials continued to examine the home and gather evidence from the scene.
Multiple fire departments also responded to the property, adding to the larger emergency presence on the narrow road in Owsley County. The response brought together local and state agencies, including the Owsley County Sheriff’s Office, the coroner’s office, firefighters, and state police investigators working to sort out the cause and origin of the blaze.
Authorities said foul play was not suspected at this time. Even so, the fire remained a serious open investigation, with officials continuing to piece together what happened in the minutes before Herald was found dead.
The case is the latest reminder of how quickly a house fire can turn fatal in rural Kentucky, where a single emergency call can pull in multiple agencies and still leave investigators with hard questions about ignition, smoke, and timing. For Booneville and the surrounding county, the central facts are now clear: a home on Amburgey Road burned, a 60-year-old man died there, and state investigators were still working to determine why.
