Owsley County Extension Launches 12-Week Walking Club for Local Residents
The Owsley County Extension Service kicked off a free 12-week Walking Club in Booneville on March 30, with Monday sessions at 4 p.m. continuing through May 11.

The Owsley County Extension Service launched a free 12-week Walking Club on March 30, establishing one of the county's most accessible structured fitness programs at its Booneville office with weekly sessions running through May 11.
Each Monday session runs from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. and is built around a consistent format: a brief warm-up, a guided walking route, a cool-down with stretching, and short educational segments covering topics such as hydration, walking safety, and locally available health resources. The structure is intentionally low-barrier, designed for families, older adults, and people returning to regular exercise after illness or extended inactivity.
The program arrives at a moment of clear public-health need. Owsley County carries a disproportionately high burden of chronic illness, including diabetes, heart disease, and obesity, conditions closely linked to physical inactivity and limited access to recreational facilities. A 12-week commitment is notably longer than most one-off wellness events, a duration that supports meaningful fitness gains and the kind of repeated neighbor-to-neighbor contact that reduces social isolation over time.
Upcoming Monday sessions fall on April 13, April 20, April 27, May 4, and May 11. The calendar also includes a Saturday session on April 18, extending access to working residents who cannot make a weekday afternoon. The consistent 4:00 p.m. time at a fixed address is intended to support habit formation rather than one-time attendance.
The Extension District Board held its own meeting at 5:00 p.m. on April 6, the same evening as that week's walking session, a pairing that signals the Booneville office's intent to use the Walking Club as a platform for broader civic engagement. That structure opens the door for local partners such as Mountain Comprehensive Health and area faith communities to refer patients and members managing chronic conditions directly into the program.
Residents interested in joining, volunteering, or inquiring about a worksite version of the program for a local school or business can reach the Owsley County Extension Service through its events calendar or by contacting the Booneville office directly through the UK Cooperative Extension county pages.
