Cannelton school board approves hires ahead of new school year

The Cannelton School Board approved multiple personnel hires at its July 16 meeting, putting staff in place before the new school year begins in the Perry County district. In a small system that serves William Bennett Early Learning Center, Myers Grade School and Cannelton Jr.-Sr. High School, each hire affects whether classrooms, offices and student services open on time.

Those decisions matter most in a district Cannelton’s size because one vacancy can ripple across several grades and duties. Filling teaching, support or administrative roles on schedule helps set class assignments, keep daily routines steady and reduce the chance of last-minute coverage problems when students return to campus. Even without a long agenda, personnel votes like these show whether the district is entering August with a stable staffing plan or still scrambling to patch gaps.

Cannelton City Schools has also been making its board work visible to the public. The district website lists board meeting live streams on its YouTube channel, and a Sept. 18, 2025 notice set a public hearing for the Cannelton Teachers Association and the Cannelton City School Corporation board meeting for 4:45 p.m. in the School Board Meeting Room at Cannelton Middle/High School, 109 South 3rd Street, Cannelton. The same notice said electronic participation was available through the district’s YouTube channel.

The staffing push comes against a broader policy backdrop that has reached Cannelton before. On Jan. 14, WFYI’s coverage of House Bill 1136 included Cannelton among the school systems discussed, a reminder that personnel decisions in a small district are tied to more than one board vote. Hiring now can determine whether the school year opens with consistent classroom coverage, enough help for daily operations and fewer disruptions for students and families in Cannelton.
