Cannelton softball falls 18-5 to Christian Academy in tough matchup

Christian Academy pulled away from Cannelton 18-5 on Thursday, showing again how fast the Warriors can turn a game into a blowout once their offense gets rolling.

The result fit a larger pattern for Christian Academy, which had already won five games by 13 runs or more. Against Cannelton, Gleason Mikesell struck out nine batters over four innings while allowing three earned runs on only two hits. The Warriors also posted a .625 batting average and a .676 on-base percentage in the game, along with one home run, numbers that underscored the depth and speed of their lineup.

For Cannelton, the game added another lopsided result to a difficult start. The loss dropped the Bulldogs to 0-4 and extended a losing streak dating back to last season to nine games. It also followed a 13-0 defeat to South Central on Monday, May 11, a 16-0 loss to Shoals on Saturday, May 9, and a 20-2 loss to Crawford County on Friday, April 17, all part of a schedule that has already asked a lot of a small Perry County program.

Even in defeat, Cannelton did put together a few offensive signs to track going forward. Four Bulldogs recorded at least one hit, including Brianna Evans, offering at least a little evidence that the lineup is finding ways to put runners on base even against much stronger opposition. For a team trying to measure progress game by game, that kind of contact matters as much as the final margin.

The matchup also reflected a gap that has shown up before. Christian Academy beat Cannelton 18-2 in May 2025 and 14-2 in a previous meeting in May 2022, suggesting a recurring difference in depth and run production between the two schools. Christian Academy of Indiana, a private Pre-K through 12 school in New Albany in Floyd County, has become a familiar benchmark for Cannelton as the Bulldogs continue working through the season under the Indiana High School Athletic Association’s girls softball framework.
