McWhirter homers in Tell City softball loss to Mt. Vernon
Bailey McWhirter supplied a homer and double, but Tell City’s offense stalled in a 7-2 loss that stretched the Marksmen’s skid to four.

Bailey McWhirter gave Tell City its loudest swing of the afternoon, but one big inning at the plate was not enough to keep the Marksmen from a 7-2 loss to Mt. Vernon on Saturday, May 16, 2026. The defeat dropped Tell City to 6-13 and extended its losing streak to four games.
McWhirter finished 2-for-4 with a home run and a double, the kind of production that showed Tell City still has hitters who can change a game quickly. The problem for the Marksmen was sustaining that pressure against a deeper Mt. Vernon lineup and a pitcher who controlled the game from the circle.

Alania Allyn led the Wildcats’ answer. She struck out 12 over seven innings, allowed one earned run and one unearned run on five hits, and also helped her own cause at the plate by going 1-for-3 with a home run. Mt. Vernon also got power from Lacy Allyn, who was 1-for-3 with a homer, while Ali Lyke went 2-for-3 with a run, a double and an RBI. The Wildcats finished with only one strikeout, a sign of how consistently they put the ball in play and kept Tell City from settling in defensively.
That combination helps explain the broader issue Tell City has faced during its late-season slide. The Marksmen entered the game averaging 6.7 runs per contest in one MaxPreps preview, and another preview listed them at 6.5. Even with that average production, the offense has not consistently translated into wins, especially when stronger pitching has been able to shut down the middle of the lineup. Tell City’s season page had shown the Marksmen at 5-5 earlier in the spring, underscoring how sharply the record has changed as the schedule has tightened.
The challenge now shifts quickly to the next stretch. Tell City was scheduled to play at South Spencer on Monday, May 18, 2026, at 5:00 p.m., then head to Pike Central on Tuesday, May 20, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. For a team trying to steady itself down the stretch, the formula is clear: string together more than one swing, cut down on decisive innings, and find a way to turn isolated damage into complete games.
