Hazard falls 8-6 to Clay County after big win over Buckhorn
Clay County’s seven-run fifth inning flipped a tight game at Hazard, handing the Bulldogs their closest loss since April 22, 2025.

A seven-run fifth inning turned a close game at Hazard High School into Clay County’s 8-6 revenge win Tuesday, spoiling the Bulldogs’ follow-up to a 17-1 rout of Buckhorn.
Clay County improved to 13-12, while Hazard fell to 14-9. MaxPreps said the defeat was Hazard’s closest since April 22, 2025, a sign that the Bulldogs were in position to win before the fifth-inning burst changed the night. It was also Clay County’s first victory at Hazard since May 7, 2016, a long gap that added weight to the Tigers’ road result.
The matchup came as a rematch of April 3, when Hazard went to Clay County and won 6-1. This time, the Tigers answered on the Bulldogs’ field and used the fifth inning to separate themselves after what had been a competitive game through the early innings. MaxPreps described the result as a narrow loss for Hazard and a reversal from the earlier meeting in Clay County.

For Hazard, the game fit the pattern of a team that has shown it can handle strong opposition and also be undone by a single stretch. The Bulldogs’ fast-pitch program, coached by Shaun Neace and Keith Combs under Hazard City Schools, has built enough momentum this season to stay in the conversation, but Tuesday showed how quickly that can change when one inning tilts against them. The loss did not erase the energy from the Buckhorn win; it showed the next step is turning close games like this into finishes.
Hazard was scheduled to travel to Breathitt County at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, giving the Bulldogs a quick chance to reset. Clay County was set to play at Owsley County at 6:00 p.m. Thursday after a win that carried both the edge of a comeback and the value of a long-awaited road breakthrough.
