Perry County native Landon Hughes earned a golden ticket on ABC’s American Idol during the Monday night episode and advanced to the show’s Hollywood round, WYMT reported on Feb. 17. The Hazard singer and guitarist drew all three judges during the Feb. 16 audition and will travel to Hollywood for the next phase of the competition.

Hughes chose the Stanley Brothers’ bluegrass standard "Little Maggie" and accompanied himself on acoustic guitar in front of judges Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie and Carrie Underwood. The Lexington Herald-Leader and Yahoo noted the audition aired Feb. 16 and that American Idol airs at 8 p.m. on ABC. MusicMayhem's coverage said Hughes "fought back tears" when handed the Golden Ticket and that all three judges ultimately advanced him despite reservations.

Judges’ comments highlighted both promise and room to grow. MusicMayhem described Luke Bryan as "a little skeptical" vocally and said Bryan pointed to a touch of vibrato toward the end as a noteworthy moment. Carrie Underwood told Hughes, "You make me happy." MusicMayhem reported Underwood also questioned whether he could stretch into varied themes on the show, citing Rock Hall of Fame and Disney Night as examples of challenges he might face if he moves forward.

Hughes brings a mixed athlete-musician background to the national stage. Lexington Herald-Leader reported he plays collegiate soccer at Lake Erie College near Cleveland and previously played for Commonwealth Soccer Club. Sources differ on his age, Lexington Herald-Leader and Yahoo describe him as 20, while MusicMayhem listed him as 19. Hughes has said the injury that pulled him back to music came after he "stepped in a hole and 'blew my ankle out,'" forcing him to pause athletics: "I had to sit down for a little bit," he told the Herald-Leader. He grew up playing piano and singing in church, and released a single, "Coal Town," a few weeks before the Idol coverage.

Musical influences cited in Herald-Leader reporting include Tyler Childers, Sturgill Simpson, John Conlee, Loretta Lynn, J.D. Crowe and Ricky Skaggs, and Hughes has long been a Grateful Dead fan. He told the Herald-Leader, "I wouldn't trade where I was raised for the world," and added, "Music is what keeps me going day to day" and "I want to leave a mark on people." He also joked in that profile that, right now, "Conway Twitty's got a hold on me right now."

Local outlets and social posts pushed hometown support as the episode aired. WTVQ promoted the broadcast with the line "The journey begins this Monday 2/16. Hazard’s own Landon Hughes takes his first step onto the national stage on American Idol exclusively on ABC 36" and used hashtags #TeamLandon #HazardKY #AmericanIdol. WTVQ lists contact information as 859-299-3636 and news36@wtvq.com at 6940 Man O' War Blvd., Lexington, KY 40509. An Instagram post tied to Hughes' handle @_landonhughes celebrated the premiere, noting the season premiere time of 8/7c.

Hughes joins at least one other Kentuckian this season; Lexington Herald-Leader noted Christian Brown, 23, of Franklin, earned a Golden Ticket on the Feb. 9 episode. For Perry County and Hazard, Hughes' advance to the Hollywood round marks a rare national spotlight for a local artist and former college athlete as he prepares for the next round of competition.
