Perry Central holds off Paintsville, wins 10-6 in baseball showdown
Sheldon Ritchie went 4-for-4 with three doubles and three RBIs as Perry Central built a 10-2 lead and survived Paintsville’s late rally, 10-6.

Sheldon Ritchie gave Perry County Central the cushion it needed, and the Commodores used it to turn a matchup with Paintsville into a 10-6 win at home Monday.
Perry Central built a 10-2 lead after five innings, then weathered a late push from Paintsville, a 15th Region powerhouse, to finish off one of the week’s most eye-catching local baseball results. Ritchie was the difference at the plate, going 4-for-4 with three doubles and three RBIs as the Commodores controlled the game early and forced Paintsville to chase from behind.
The win carried added weight because of the opponent. Paintsville arrived with a reputation as one of eastern Kentucky’s stronger programs, and Perry Central answered with the kind of offensive burst that can define a season. A large early lead against that level of competition suggested more than a hot inning or two. It pointed to a lineup that put pressure on the other side from the start and a team willing to hold its ground when the game tightened late.
Perry County Central High School, a 14th Region school in Hazard with enrollment listed at 799 for grades 9-12, has made Commodore Field its home, a site with a listed capacity of 1,500. Monday’s result fit the setting: a local crowd getting a direct look at a team that has shown it can handle one of the better names on the eastern Kentucky schedule.
The matchup also fit a broader pattern between the two programs. Perry Central and Paintsville have crossed paths before, including a previous game at Charlie Adkins Field, giving this latest meeting more of a familiar regional edge than a one-off non-district stop. For Perry Central, the final score mattered, but so did the way it came together. The Commodores built the margin, absorbed the response, and closed out a win that keeps their spring conversation centered on what they can do against top-tier competition.
