Perry County Central falls in 8th Region boys volleyball opener
Perry County Central opened at 6:30 p.m. against Letcher County Central and was swept 3-0, while Buckhorn kept Perry County alive in the bracket.

Perry County Central opened the 8th Region boys volleyball tournament at 6:30 p.m. May 7 at Letcher County Central High School and was swept 3-0 by the host team, ending one Perry County path in the bracket before the regional field had even settled in.
The loss left Buckhorn as Perry County’s remaining team in play, with the Bucks scheduled to face Powell County in another opening-round matchup. That kept a second local school in the regional tournament and gave Perry County readers one more name to track as the postseason moved toward Saturday’s semifinal round at Letcher County Central gym.

The bracket was tight and unforgiving. Jenkins was matched with Pikeville in another opening-round pairing, while the winner of Powell County and Buckhorn was set to meet Fleming County in the 10:00 a.m. Saturday semifinal. Letcher County Central, which handled Perry County Central in the opener, was scheduled to play Pikeville at noon Saturday. The championship game was set for 4:00 p.m. Saturday, all at Letcher County Central gym.
For Perry County Central and Buckhorn, the draw carried extra weight because the two schools had already built a small season-long rivalry before region play began. Perry County Central beat Buckhorn 3-2 on March 26, but Buckhorn answered with a 3-1 win on April 18 at Letcher County Central High School. Letcher County Central had also beaten Buckhorn 3-0 on April 6 and Perry County Central 3-2 on April 16, a sign that the 8th Region’s top end had already separated itself from the middle of the field.
Those results framed what Perry County Central and Buckhorn faced in the bracket. MaxPreps listed Perry County Central at 3-5 entering the April 18 match with Buckhorn and Buckhorn at 3-10, underscoring how both teams had spent much of the spring fighting to stay within striking distance of the region’s stronger programs. Letcher County Central’s opening-round sweep showed how steep the climb was once postseason play began.
The regional tournament also feeds directly into the next step of the state picture. The Kentucky High School Athletic Association’s 2026 boys volleyball state tournament is set to begin May 11, with the region winner and runner-up advancing into that bracket. For Perry County, that made the opening night in Letcher County about more than one loss and one surviving team. It was the first hard split in a postseason that could still send a local school forward, if Buckhorn could turn its side of the bracket into a run.
