Registration closes at 3 p.m. today for cooks who want to compete in the Delta Cultural Center's annual Beans, Greens & Cornbread contest, scheduled Saturday at the Depot Museum in Helena-West Helena.

The contest runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 11 at the Delta Eagle Room, 95 Missouri Street. Entrants may compete in any or all of three categories: beans, greens and cornbread. The DCC provides cups and utensils for the public tasting, and visitors can cast a people's choice ballot alongside the official judging. Winners are announced at 1 p.m.

Cooks must deliver their dishes to the Delta Eagle Room between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. Saturday and remain with their entries through the 1 p.m. announcement to assist with sampling. Registration forms are available at the Delta Cultural Center Visitor Center at 141 Cherry Street and must be returned by 3 p.m. today, April 10, to qualify. Entry is free.

For questions or to obtain registration materials, contact the center at 870-338-4350 or info@deltaculturalcenter.com.

Saturday's event falls on the same weekend as the Mile Zero festival, one of the region's largest spring draws, concentrating visitors in downtown Helena-West Helena and creating foot traffic that reaches Missouri Street businesses, galleries and music venues clustered near the Depot Museum.

The Beans, Greens & Cornbread contest has become a fixture in the DCC's spring calendar. The center, which anchors Helena-West Helena's downtown with a mission to document and celebrate Delta cultural heritage, positions the food contest as an entry point into regional foodways: an accessible tradition that connects generational recipes to new audiences arriving each April.
