Possible Tornado Near Marvell Prompts Immediate Shelter Warning for Residents
Weather spotters reported a possible tornado and funnel cloud near Marvell early Sunday as tornado warnings urged Phillips County residents to take shelter immediately.

Weather spotters reported a possible tornado and funnel cloud near Marvell early March 16, with multiple accounts urging residents to take shelter immediately as tornado warnings remained in effect across the region. Storm chasers also captured footage of the severe storm system, though the National Weather Service has not confirmed a tornado touchdown as of this report.
The spotter reports near Marvell followed a volatile evening. The National Weather Service office in Little Rock issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning on March 15 at 5:26 PM CDT, valid until 6:15 PM CDT, for a storm that radar indicated was producing 60 mph wind gusts and penny-size hail. At the time of issuance, that severe thunderstorm was located near Traskwood, approximately 8 miles east of Malvern, and moving east at 50 mph. The NWS warned residents to expect damage to roofs, siding, and trees across a corridor of communities including Benton, Sheridan, Haskell, Prattsville, Poyen, East End, and Bauxite, among others.
Tornado Watch 53 was also in effect, valid until 9 PM CDT, covering six counties in Arkansas, including Union, Columbia, Hempstead, Lafayette, Miller, and Nevada, along with nine parishes in Louisiana and 11 counties in northeast Texas. Cities named in the watch text included El Dorado, Hope, Bossier City, Homer, and Haynesville, reflecting how broadly the severe weather threat extended across the tri-state region.
The storm system carried hazards beyond the immediate tornado threat. A Wind Advisory called for southerly winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph, with winds expected to shift northwesterly and maintain that intensity through Monday evening. A Freeze Watch layered additional risk onto the forecast, with sub-freezing temperatures as low as 23 degrees possible from Monday evening through Tuesday morning across portions of southeast Arkansas, northeast Louisiana, and parts of Mississippi. The NWS cautioned that frost and freeze conditions could kill crops and other sensitive vegetation, a concern that carries particular weight for agricultural communities throughout the Delta.
Phillips County residents near Marvell should continue monitoring updates from the National Weather Service in Little Rock, as the possible tornado and funnel cloud sighting has not yet been assessed by a storm survey team. The distinction between a confirmed tornado and a spotter-reported funnel cloud matters for damage claims, emergency declarations, and recovery resources, and NWS confirmation remains the authoritative threshold.
