Kids shot hoops with officers, shared pizza, and watched movies at the PAL center while patrol units fanned out across Prince George's County on Friday and into Saturday morning, as more than 30 municipal, county and regional law enforcement agencies converged for the latest round of Operation Blue Lights Nights.

The coordinated public safety initiative, launched by the Prince George's County Police Department, ran from 5:00 p.m. through 3:00 a.m. on both March 20 and March 21, blanketing the county with high-visibility patrols, traffic enforcement checkpoints, and community engagement events at the district level. The Metropolitan Police Department joined as a regional partner, extending the operation's reach along the DC-Maryland border and into all seven MPD districts.

PGPD Chief George Nader said the initiative has already shown promising results, noting a measurable drop in crime following their previous operation.

The enforcement side of the operation targeted specific behaviors: speeding, reckless driving, red-light violations, and counterfeit tags. In Mount Rainier, the City Police Department concentrated patrols on Rhode Island Avenue, Eastern Avenue, Queens Chapel Road, and the city's commercial and transit hubs. University Park Police Chief David Coleman, writing in his department's blog the day before the operation began, confirmed that University Park officers would conduct proactive enforcement while leveraging expanded county resources throughout the weekend.

MPD brought its Crime Suppression Teams, deploying units in areas identified through recent crime trend analysis. The department's Real Time Crime Center maintained direct contact with PGPD's command center throughout the operation, enabling rapid response as conditions developed. MPD's Traffic Safety and Specialized Enforcement Section ran Traffic Safety Compliance checkpoints along major arteries near the Prince George's County border, with a specific focus on deterring impaired driving.

The community engagement component drew families directly into contact with officers outside the usual enforcement context. Parent Regina Ngondwe brought her two sons to one of the events, describing her reasoning plainly: "For me, it's very important that my boys get to know what's happening in the community, what police does, they are not people to be feared."

MPD Chief Pamela A. Smith, speaking to the broader purpose of the initiative, said: "Public safety is a shared responsibility, and Operation Blue Lights Nights is a springboard for deeper collaboration between law enforcement agencies and the communities we serve across the National Capital Region."

Mount Rainier framed its participation within a longer tradition of community-oriented policing, pointing to recurring programs including Public Safety Night, National Night Out, Shop with a Cop, and Coffee with a Cop as evidence of the department's ongoing investment in resident relationships. The March 20-21 operation marked the second known iteration of the initiative in the National Capital Region, following a previous Blue Lights Nights deployment on September 26-27, 2025, which also ran from 5:00 p.m. through 3:00 a.m. across participating jurisdictions.
