Maryland State Police arrested 23-year-old Jeremiah David Fairfax of Washington, D.C., after an attempted traffic stop on the I-495 inner loop near Glenarden Parkway ended in a multi-vehicle crash and on-scene apprehension. The stop was initiated shortly before 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2026, as the trooper observed a Honda Insight driving recklessly in the travel lanes.

According to investigators, Fairfax “started to move to the shoulder of the road, but then took off, careening into three other vehicles.” The Honda then “shot back into traffic” and “came to a stop amid the wreckage.” Fairfax exited the vehicle and tried to run from the scene, but a Maryland State Police trooper caught and detained him. Fairfax was transported to an area hospital for treatment of crash-related injuries before being jailed at the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections, where he is being held without bond.

Evidence recovered from the dark gray Honda Insight, which had been reported stolen to the Metropolitan Police Department in the District of Columbia, included a loaded 10mm Glock with a high-capacity magazine and what authorities described as “an array of drugs.” Investigators report suspected cocaine, suspected cyclobenzaprine, a scale, and other suspected illegal drugs were found inside the vehicle. Fairfax faces multiple charges, including felony motor vehicle theft, unlawful wearing and carrying of a loaded handgun, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony or crime of violence, and other firearm and traffic-related counts. Additional drug-related charges are pending.

The incident underscores several local public-safety and policy questions. The Beltway is a major commuter artery for Prince George’s County residents and the timing of the crash - during evening travel - amplified risk to drivers, passengers, and first responders. The recovery of a stolen vehicle alongside a loaded firearm and suspected controlled substances illustrates the convergence of vehicle theft, illegal gun access, and drug activity that regional law enforcement increasingly confronts.

Maryland State Police College Park and Forestville barracks are leading the investigation with assistance from the Metropolitan Police Department. The case will proceed through Prince George’s County booking and charging processes; Fairfax’s booking status lists him as held without bond. Troop reports, dashcam or body-worn camera footage, the MPD stolen vehicle report, and formal charging documents will be key records for understanding potential criminal histories, ownership of the stolen vehicle, and any additional charges.

For Beltway commuters and community leaders, the episode is a reminder of the stakes in cross-jurisdictional policing, vehicle theft prevention, and traffic enforcement during peak travel times. Expect investigators to publish further details as charges are filed and court dockets open, and for law enforcement to cite evidence recovered at the scene when presenting the case to prosecutors.
