MARC Penn Line riders in Prince George’s County were hit with delays of 25 to 35 minutes after switch problems south of New Carrollton forced single-track operations between Bowie and Washington Union Station. The disruption landed hardest on commuters traveling through Bowie State and New Carrollton, where a few minutes of track trouble can push a Washington arrival far enough back to miss a transfer, arrive late to a federal office, or throw off a childcare pickup.

Maryland Transit Administration service alert 26555 said all Penn Line trains were expected to run 20 to 30 minutes behind schedule after the switch issue near New Carrollton Station. The alert was posted at 5:13 p.m. Friday and was set to run through 6:30 p.m., with the agency telling passengers to use the Camden Line while the problem affected the corridor. The agency also said the extent of the delay was not yet known.

The Penn Line’s tight timing shows why the problem spread so quickly. One Washington-bound trip listed on the MTA schedule shows Bowie State at 5:26 a.m., New Carrollton at 5:38 a.m. and Washington Union Station at 5:53 a.m. That kind of narrow spacing leaves little room for a switch failure south of New Carrollton, especially on a line that serves riders moving daily between Prince George’s County and downtown Washington.

The corridor’s role in the region’s commuter network makes the disruption more than a simple delay. Bowie State, New Carrollton and Union Station sit on one of the region’s most important rail links, carrying riders who depend on predictable arrival times and quick connections. When MARC is forced to single-track between Bowie and Union Station, the slowdown can ripple through the entire line and into the morning routines of workers, students and families.

The incident also came against a backdrop of ongoing rail work in the Northeast Corridor. In 2024, MTA said Amtrak Northeast Corridor track improvement projects would affect Penn Line service and that the New Carrollton station platform was scheduled for improvements. The agency has also said the catenary upgrade would help pave the way for the Penn Line’s transition to all-electric trains after completion of the Frederick Douglass Tunnel Program.
