Drivers using the southbound Capital Beltway in Lanham faced two weeks of overnight lane closures as Maryland crews started bridge repairs over the Amtrak tracks between Maryland Route 450, Exit 20B-A, and U.S. Route 50 east, Exit 19-A.

The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration said the project covered bridge deck and joint repairs on the I-95/I-495 bridge and was scheduled to begin Saturday evening, May 2, with work expected to wrap up by May 17, weather permitting. Crews planned to close three right lanes on the Beltway inner loop from 9 p.m. Saturday through 8 a.m. Sunday, then return Sundays through Thursdays from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. for additional single-, double- and triple-lane closures.

For commuters who use the corridor to reach jobs in Prince George’s County, the District, or points farther north and south, the closures were likely to hit first in the late evening and overnight hours, when delivery trucks, freight traffic, late-shift workers and other through traffic often rely on the Beltway to move between jurisdictions. The state also said there would be work on two weekends, except Mother’s Day weekend, adding another stretch of potential delays for travelers planning early-morning or overnight trips.

MDOT SHA identified Marksmen Company of Baltimore as the contractor for the repair job. The agency said advance warning signs, drums and cones would guide motorists through the work zone, and it urged drivers to obey posted speed limits and stay alert while passing through the area. The temporary disruption comes on one of the region’s most heavily traveled corridors, a route that helps connect Prince George’s County’s major highways, transit hubs and commercial centers. County planning materials note that Prince George’s has 15 Metrorail stations and more than 2,500 acres of undeveloped land within a half-mile of those stations, underscoring how much of the county’s movement depends on reliable transportation links.

MDOT SHA’s traffic volume maps track Annual Average Daily Traffic counts at locations across Maryland roads, a reminder that even overnight closures on a single bridge can ripple beyond the work zone. In Prince George’s County, that impact will be felt first by people trying to get through Lanham while the Beltway is narrowed night after night.
