A major crash on westbound Interstate 30 at FM 2642 brought traffic to a standstill Friday, fully blocking the route from Hunt County into Rockwall County and leaving no vehicles able to pass. FOX 4 traffic reporter Chip Waggoner warned drivers to expect severe delays before later updates showed the right lane had reopened.

The shutdown hit one of the county’s most pressure-packed corridors, where I-30 is already under heavy construction east of Ben Payne to FM 2642. Rockwall County says the project is widening the main lanes in both directions from two lanes to three and expanding the frontage roads at the same time, a major buildout that is changing how traffic moves through the eastern edge of the county.

TxDOT does not expect any major closures before the end of the year on the Rockwall County I-30 expansion project, but even smaller incidents can quickly ripple across the corridor. That was already clear in the county’s April 3 traffic bulletin, which warned of planned lane closures on Interstate 30 for the week of April 6-11, including an eastbound freeway closure overnight from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. for bridge-deck work at FM 3549.

For commuters, the combination of construction and a serious crash meant little margin for error on a road that carries daily traffic between Hunt County, Rockwall County and the rest of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. When westbound lanes shut down at FM 2642, backups built fast, especially for drivers trying to cross into Rockwall County during the afternoon and evening peak travel periods.

TxDOT maintains real-time incident reporting for the Dallas District, and the agency also keeps a statewide crash database for reported motor vehicle wrecks on public roadways and the state highway system. On a corridor already narrowed by widening work, that kind of live information can be the difference between sitting in a long backup and finding a way around it.
