I-30 Crash in Fate Closes Eastbound Lanes, Delays Reach Rockwall
A multi-vehicle crash shut all eastbound I-30 lanes at Blackland Road in Fate on Monday, the third major closure at this stretch in 17 months, backing delays into Rockwall.

A multi-vehicle crash closed all eastbound lanes of Interstate 30 at Blackland Road in Fate on Monday, the third documented major closure at this stretch in 17 months, pushing traffic delays back through Rockwall while drivers were routed to the I-30 frontage road for the duration of the shutdown.
Eastbound traffic was diverted off the highway at Farm-to-Market Road 551 and directed to the frontage road, the same bypass pattern that has accompanied prior closures at this interchange. Fate sits on I-30 directly between Rockwall to the west and Royse City to the east, putting commuters from both cities squarely in the backup and extending the ripple toward the Lake Ray Hubbard bridge approaches west of downtown Rockwall. Officials did not immediately confirm a reopening estimate.
Drivers heading east toward Royse City found the clearest path on FM 3549, which has served as the official eastbound detour during previous I-30 shutdowns at FM 551. Those needing to reach downtown Rockwall from the east, or bypass the closure entirely via a north-south corridor, used FM 548. The I-30 frontage road remained the only continuous option for anyone already between the Blackland Road closure and the next accessible interchange.
Monday's crash was the latest in a string of serious incidents at this specific corridor. A major multi-vehicle wreck struck the I-30 and FM 551 intersection on November 28, 2024. A separate multi-vehicle pileup hit the same Fate section of I-30 on December 28, 2025. An earlier fatal crash at FM 551 shut down both directions of the interstate and involved two semis and five other vehicles, killing one person and leaving a second in critical condition.
TxDOT's ongoing I-30 reconstruction through Rockwall County adds a structural dimension to the recurring closures. Active construction work in the FM 551 corridor has included planned shutdowns of the eastbound frontage road between FM 551 and Erby Campbell, the very diversion route that emergency managers default to when the main lanes go down. That narrowing of contingency capacity, combined with surging traffic volumes tied to Rockwall County's population growth, means drivers and first responders are competing for the same shrinking alternatives each time the interstate stops.
