Motorcyclist seriously injured in I-30 crash near John King Boulevard

A motorcyclist was seriously injured after a vehicle and a motorcycle collided on eastbound Interstate 30 near John King Boulevard in Rockwall just after midnight Friday, June 26. The other driver was not hurt.

Officers responded to the crash area shortly after midnight, and the rider was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. The collision happened on one of Rockwall County’s most heavily traveled corridors, at a junction that carries traffic into and out of the city’s east side and toward Lake Ray Hubbard.

The crash happened in a section of I-30 that is overburdened. TxDOT is widening the corridor from Bass Pro Drive to the Hunt County line because the existing configuration cannot handle current congestion and population growth. Incidents on the lake bridge can trigger bottlenecks and road closures.

Work on the corridor has repeatedly centered on John King Boulevard. Rockwall County has posted overnight full closures and lane restrictions tied to bridge activities in the area, including a closure of the John King Boulevard I-30 eastbound frontage road to I-30 westbound frontage road connection from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Contractor crews work closely with EMS, fire and police to preserve emergency access during those closures.

John King Boulevard was originally planned to relieve traffic on SH 205 and to serve development on Rockwall’s east side. It is now one of the key access points feeding a fast-growing interchange where commuter traffic, construction zones and highway speeds mix with heavier regional travel.

TxDOT’s East Texas corridor study calls I-30 a critical east-west link for travel and trade. Friday’s crash happened on a corridor with daily volume, overnight work and limited room for error on the bridge over Lake Ray Hubbard.
