Rockwall County plans FM 549 widening to begin this summer, finish in 2029
Morning school runs and SH 276 to SH 205 commutes face a three-year construction phase as FM 549 widening starts this summer and runs to 2029.

Morning school drop-offs, cross-county errands and the drive between SH 276 and SH 205 are heading into a long construction phase as Rockwall County prepares to widen FM 549 this summer and keep work moving through the summer of 2029.
The county said April 17 that the project will stretch from SH 276 to SH 205, a sign that the road work is not a quick patch but a major corridor rebuild. A preconstruction meeting is set for April 20, the next step before crews move in. For drivers who use FM 549 to reach Rockwall, Fate or Heath, the practical reality is years of lane changes, work zones and slower access along one of the county’s most important growth routes.
County leaders have been laying the groundwork for months. On Feb. 20, TxDOT Project Development Director Mo Bur addressed the Rockwall County Infrastructure Consortium about widening FM 549 to four lanes, and the county said it was preparing to launch a Trip 21 Road Bond public dashboard to track progress. Rockwall County’s Construction Updates page says the county is still working through funding, preliminary design and other requirements before construction can begin, including added compliance tied to federal and state dollars.
FM 549 sits at the center of a larger transportation plan. The county’s corridor page describes an 11.5-mile FM 549 corridor from FM 740 to FM 552, spanning Rockwall, Heath and Fate, with a long-term goal of turning it into a six-lane divided urban facility. That page lists a $30 million bond request against a total project cost of $114.4 million. Earlier TxDOT public-meeting material showed a narrower segment, from SH 205 to SH 276, would widen about 2.08 miles to a four-lane roadway with a 20-foot center turn lane median and 5-foot sidewalks on both sides.
The road also has been on the county’s bond list for years. Records show FM 549 was Project 1 in the 2021 Road Bond Program, and June 18, 2024 reporting said that phase would widen FM 549 from FM 740 to SH 205 over 3.6 miles, converting it from two lanes to four. The April 2026 Planning Consortium Report includes an FM 549 status section, underscoring that the corridor remains one of Rockwall County’s active priorities as development continues across the eastern side of the county.
