Rockwall County plans major FM 548 and FM 550 road projects
FM 548 and FM 550 are set for major upgrades, with resurfacing, turn lanes and new signals that will reshape traffic through Heath and the county’s busiest growth corridors.

Commuters on FM 548 and FM 550 are facing a new round of roadway work that will add turn lanes, traffic signals and a fresh asphalt surface across some of Rockwall County’s most pressured corridors. The biggest project is the FM 548 resurfacing job, a county estimate of $3.4 million that calls for spot flexible pavement repairs and a 2-inch asphalt overlay between SH 205 and SH 276.
That FM 548 project is slated for award at the Texas Transportation Commission meeting on April 30, 2026. Once a contract is executed, county officials say the schedule includes about two months for mobilization and materials, followed by five to six months of construction. TxDOT bid documents describe the work as a 7.381-mile resurfacing project from SH 276 to SH 205, with an estimated cost of $3,804,796.15 and 68 working days to complete under control number 1016-04-021 and project number F 2026 (472). For drivers, that points to a long lead time before work starts, then a sustained construction period once crews move in.
The FM 550 package is the other major item, with a county estimate of $2.3 million and a separate award date set for April 30. County officials say the project will add left-turn lanes and a traffic signal at FM 550 and Rabbit Ridge, install a traffic signal at FM 740 in Heath near the new fire station, and restripe SH 276 at Rochell Road and at FM 551 to allow left-turn lanes and signals. The county says that package will also carry a three-month delay for materials and mobilization before construction begins, then about seven to eight months of actual work. TxDOT solicitation documents list the signal package as a 2.030-mile project, with an estimated cost of $2,169,620.36, control number 1014-03-065 and project number F 2026 (478), and show a bid date of April 7, 2026.

The projects fit into a broader county growth-management question that has been building since voters approved Trip 21 on November 2, 2021, authorizing $150 million in bonds for 26 road projects countywide. Rockwall County’s population reached an estimated 140,738 in July 2025, up from 107,819 in the 2020 census, a 30.5% jump that has intensified traffic pressure on corridors linking Heath, Rockwall and the SH 276 and SH 205 corridors. County transportation officials say projects using state and federal funding must clear additional requirements before construction can begin, stretching the timeline even when money is in place.
The FM 550 work also follows earlier corridor changes already moving through the county’s bond program, including the 2024 project update that pushed FM 550 engineering farther along south of SH 205 toward Meadowcreek. Transportation awards and related county business are handled in public at the Rockwall County Commissioners Court, which meets at 9 a.m. on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at the Historic Courthouse in Rockwall.
