Rockwall police lift school secure status after shots fired call

Rockwall police lifted a brief secure status at a nearby elementary school after a shots-fired call near Ridge Road West sent officers into The Shores neighborhood and put nearby residents on alert.

Police responded at about 9:30 a.m. on May 6 to reports of gunfire near Ridge Road West and increased their presence in the area while they checked the source of the shots. Residents were advised to avoid the neighborhood during the active investigation, and a Rockwall ISD elementary school nearby was briefly placed on secure status as officers worked the scene.

About an hour later, police said they had located the source of the gunfire. The shots were traced to a nearby resident with acreage who was shooting at squirrels on his property, ending the concern that had spread through the area. No injuries were reported.

The incident briefly disrupted the morning in a part of Rockwall that includes homes near Ridge Road West and The Shores neighborhood, where a sudden gunfire report can trigger immediate concern because of the proximity to schools and residential streets. Police said the secure status was lifted once the source was identified, but the episode showed how quickly an isolated call can affect a wider stretch of the community while officers sort out whether a threat is real.
